Why We Can't Cook Breakfast for our Guests

Visitors may expect a "Bed and Breakfast" to serve a cooked breakfast, but in Maui that is usually not the case. The State Health Code, and County B&B zoning ordinances prohibit proprietors from cooking for guests, providing dairy products, serving meat or eggs, or even slicing fresh fruit, unless the B&B is also a permitted "food service establishment", which means "restaurant". Restaurants are required to have a commercial kitchen license, which requires rigorous architectural modifications and is prohibitively expensive for all but a few of the largest-scale B&Bs on the island.

Despite this restriction,  guests will find their kitchen or kitchenette stocked with assorted cereals, breakfast bars, a variety of tropical juices, Kona-blend roasted coffee beans, teas, fresh island fruit and various baked goods.  Some B&Bs feature a communal lifestyle, offering a continental breakfast, at a specified time, in a common area. Since many of our guests are honeymoon couples, we provide these breakfast ingredients which you can enjoy in the privacy of your suite or cottage, at a time which is convenient for you.

Although our hands are tied, regarding serving a cooked breakfast, your hosts will make every effort to provide you with warm service and welcome you to make yourselves at home during your visit.
